Gukesh Dommaraju, born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, is one of the brightest stars in the chess world. Known for his tremendous and exceptional achievement at a young age, Gukesh became the second-youngest Grandmaster in history at just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days in January 2019.

Over the years, Gukesh has achieved numerous milestones, including winning the gold medal on the top board at the 2022 Chess Olympiad and breaking into the FIDE world’s top 10 rankings in 2023, making him the youngest player ever to achieve this feat. His success at the 2023 FIDE World Cup, where he reached the semifinals, secured him a place in the 2024 Candidates Tournament, a key step toward the World Chess Championship.

In 2023, Gukesh also played an exhibition match against reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren, further showcasing his potential to compete at the highest level. With his extraordinary achievements and determination, Gukesh Dommaraju is seen as a future contender for the World Chess Championship and a leading figure in Indian chess.

Achievements

  1. Second youngest Grandmaster in history (2019): Gukesh achieved the Grandmaster title at the age of 12, becoming the second-youngest Grandmaster in the history of chess.
  2. World Cadet Chess Champion (2018): Won a gold medal in the Under-12 category in Spain. 
  3. Youngest Player in the World’s Top 100 (2021): Youngest player to enter the world top 100 of FIDE’s world ranking
  4. Youngest to Break into the World Top 10 (2023): At the age of 17, surpassed Magnus Carlsen’s record to become the youngest player to break into the list of the Top 10 youngest players.
  5. Chess Olympiad (2022): Representing India on 2, he scored a total of 9/11, achieving a gold medal for Best Individual Performance.
  6.  Asian Continental Chess Championship (2023): He claimed the championship title, later called the strongest chess player in Asia.
  7. World Cup (2023): Gukesh reached the semi-final in 2024, qualifying for the finals of the World Chess Championship.
